HOME MACHINE SHOP . . . ENCO HSS Shell Mills & Arbors
HSS shell mills and a shell mill arbor are a great asset to the home machinist.
A shell mill will provide very fine finishes over a considerably larger area than an
end mill and greatly reduce or entirely eliminate surface banding that is common
with less rigid and less precise Chinese made milling machines.
In many cases the shell mill will replace the fly cutter and doesn't require
sharpening or positioning of tool bits as with the fly cutter.
The HSS shell mills are also useful for hogging (deep wide cuts) in aluminum
on machines with less rigidity and less horsepower.
The HSS shell mills will retain sharpness and provide a long service life when
properly used with aluminum and a coolant or lubricant such as kerosene.
The HSS shell mills work well with steel and stainless steel using cutting oils
but will have a considerably shorter service life.
The ENCO HSS shell mills work well with Delrin when used with a water soluble
coolant such Rustlick WS-5050.
The ENCO HSS shell mills have been thorougly tested on the Rong Fu RF-40
mill drill, Rong Fu clone mill drills and the Smithy Granite 1324 providing
excellent finishes and results.
The ENCO HSS shell mills have been initially tested with the Sieg Super X3 mill
from Grizzly (G0619) and are suited for limited use on the Super X3 mill.
The 1 HP spindle motor on the Sieg Super X3 does not have the horse power
to properly drive the HSS shell mill when the cutter's entire diameter of teeth
are in contact with the work piece. However, single cuts 1/4" deep and 1" wide
have been successfully made in 6061 aluminum on the Sieg Super X3 using
a HSS shell mill and the finish was excellent.
The ENCO HSS shell mills are very good quality tooling made in Poland.
